It was an eye-opening conversation with Oyoko Odhiambo from the Bipolar Heroes Foundation and a Human Rights Defender. We discussed the complexities of bipolar disorder and how it can manifest in episodes of mood swings. We are grateful for the insight and knowledge shared!
Bipolar is a disorder associated with episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs, manic episodes may include symptoms such as high energy, reduced need for sleep and loss of touch with reality.
Depressive episodes may include symptoms such as low energy, low motivation and loss of interest in daily activities. Mood episodes last days to months at a time and may also be associated with suicidal thoughts.
Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications and psychotherapy.
It was an honor to have a conversation with Dr. Chitayi Murabula, President of the Kenya Psychiatric Association.
