The moment that left us speechless wasn't supposed to happen. What began as a straightforward review of Templeton Rye's 13-Year Hidden Stash Collection transformed into whiskey alchemy when we spontaneously mixed it with Old Fitzgerald 9-Year Bottled in Bond.
The Templeton Rye 13-Year deserves attention on its own merits. Priced around $200, this 108-proof limited release (only 3,456 bottles produced) comes in an elegant green presentation box that reflects its premium status. The whiskey's deep amber color immediately captivates, while its profile delivers rich vanilla bean, dried fruits, and a backbone of spice-driven oak. As bottle #629, our particular expression showcases the meticulous craftsmanship behind this MGP-sourced, Iowa-finished product.
Meanwhile, the Old Fitzgerald 9-Year Bottled in Bond ($130) represents the other end of the whiskey spectrum - a wheated bourbon with notes of brown sugar, milk chocolate, and butterscotch that drinks remarkably smooth despite its 100 proof strength. Both whiskeys impressed us individually, earning their place among premium offerings.
But something magical happened when equal parts of these spirits mingled in our glasses.
