During a war, especially a big one, people will try all kinds of bizarre and unusual ideas. Attaching tiny bombs to bats. Or filling the oceans with so many mines that some are still showing up today. The guys in the U.S. Navy asked for ideas and someone came up with this one. Make the ships invisible…well at least to sonar and radar. The navy was happy with the results so they moved on to the next step. The Destroyer Escort, DE-173 or Destroyer Escort, a brand new ship that had just rolled off the assembly line was to be used. It would later become the Eldridge after it had been stripped of all the electronics and secret gear. Not only did the ship disappear, it was transported 270 miles away. Upon its return the crew was found in all manner of distress. Here is the story of invisibility and transportation.
