How did the first Thanksgiving holiday happen? Why was it

celebrated? Why were the Pilgrims so thankful? And just who were these intrepid Englishmen with funny clothes and shoes living on an abandoned Indian settlement? These and many more questions will be answered in this special
Thanksgiving Day episode.

Chris and Casey give you an overview of the whole story of

the Pilgrims, from their daring and humble beginnings in small English villages, to their thriving and dangerous lives in the Plymouth Colony of New England in the mid-1600s. We begin with their rebellious non-conformist meetings in England under the oppressive reign of James I and the Anglican Church, which led them to seek an escape to the Netherlands in 1608. Once in Holland, we’ll learn of their
uncomfortable and physically exhausting struggle to support themselves in a foreign land, while their children become warped by the ungodly society of the Dutch. Then, we recount their departure from Holland and England on the
Mayflower, enduring months of storms, bad food, and illness. Next, we describe the major events of their settlement in the New World, from the beginnings, to the 1st Thanksgiving, to the decline of the Plymouth economy in the mid-1600s, leading up to King Philip’s War. In this discussion, you’ll meet their first pastor, John Robinson, their ruling elder William Brewster, their brave military captain Myles Standish, their helpful native interpreter and mentor, Squanto, as well as the famed one-time visitor to Plymouth, Roger Williams. Finally, we end with a few important lessons both for believers and
unbelievers alike.

You’ll find that the Pilgrims had a delight in the gospel, a

love for each other, and a fervent devotion to obeying the Lord Jesus in all that they did. Although they had faults that we point out, they serve as a godly example of Christian community that western believers would do well to learn
from, and to improve the work that they long ago started in forming the Plymouth Colony.
