Joseph is approached by his brothers who are afraid he might revenge their evil now that their father Jacob was dead. Joseph reassures them saying, "Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God?" (Genesis 50:19) Joseph's rhetorical question is the same question his father asked his mum when Rachel confronted Jacob on her earlier childlessness. (Genesis 30:2)
