Text Me When You Get Home

The Plague Village of Eyam

Listen Later

This week, Craig takes us back in time to 1666 to tell us how a small village showed true courage and fortitude to prevent the spread of plague from beyond its borders.

When plague arrived in the village in September 1665 via  a flea-infested bundle of cloth arrived from London, rather than flee, and risk spreading the infection further still, villagers locked themselves away to suffer in isolation.

For the next 14 months, plague swept through the village. Estimates put the total number of villagers killed by plague at 260. Whilst a relatively small number in of itself - this is believed to account for roughly 75% of the population.

So join us as we tell you about the stories of these brave people who set a great example for us all to follow and aspire to in these Covid ridden times.
