Uganda’s presidential candidate Bobi Wine was released on bail last Friday after his arrest triggered protests that led to at least 37 deaths. He was charged with holding rallies likely to spread the coronavirus. The country is going to the polls in January for presidential elections. Long term president Yoweri Musaveni who is accused of corruption and nepotism has strong western allies while Bobi Wine is gaining popularity with the youth. How can we expect all of this to end having seen through history how ruling parties tend to stay in power regardless of an election outcome?
