Luna is house-sitting for a friend in the small town of Ashwick, Vermont, in late October. The house is old but charming, with a wide front porch and a wooden swing that creaks in the wind. The first night, she hears a child's laugh from the swing—though no one is there. The neighbor tells her that a little girl named Emily died on that swing ten years ago, a fall that broke her neck. Luna tries to ignore it, but each night the laughter grows closer, more insistent. Then, on the third night, the swing is rocking when she looks out the window.
