In the spring of 2019, I found myself at Stony Man Overlook, a narrow pullout on a gravel road in the Monongahela National Forest. I was tracing an old survey line from a 1970s USGS map, looking for a marker that supposedly sat at the edge of the cliff. The map showed a single blue dot—no label, no elevation, just a dot. I found the marker, a rusted iron post driven into the rock, and a small tin box wired to it. Inside were three photographs, a cassette tape, and a note that read: 'If you're reading this, don't look back.' This is the story of what I heard on that tape, and what I saw when I finally turned around.
