Discussion at the San Marcos city council and SMCISD board meeting is leaving some local officials to question the logistics of moving elections in the city.

At a recent city council workshop, the council discussed amending the city charter to potentially move elections to off-years. But with such low turnout at the polls, why move the elections at all? The city council is also considering amending the charter without going through the appointment process of a charter review committee.

Additionally, the San Marcos Consolidated School District board of trustees recently shot down an item to petition the legislature to move school board elections to November. But with such low turnout at the polls in May elections for the school board, why not move the elections to November?

This week, Exsar was joined by former-Mayor John Thomaides, and school board trustees Anne Halsey and Miguel Arredondo, to discuss the potential consequence of moving elections.
