Sermon Notes—"The Potter's House"
"We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ."
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text:

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2"Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words." 3So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel. 4And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. 5Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6"O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, 8and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. 9And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, 10and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it.
Jeremiah 18:1–10 (ESV)

Lessons for parents from the potter's house:

1. The potter had a plan for the clay before he put it on the wheel. Every child has been UNIQUELY and INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED by God.

13For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. 14I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. Psalm 139:13–14 (NKJV)

2. The clay belonged to the potter, and he was free to shape it into whatever he desired. CHILDREN are not OURS, they BELONG to the Lord.

3. Instead of throwing away the clay the potter reworked it. God will never THROW AWAY your child. They're STILL on the WHEEL.

8The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Psalm 103:8–12 (NIV)

God may have to "WORK THEM OVER" in order for them to become what He desires.

God's plan for your child's life may not be YOUR PLAN. His plan is ALWAYS BETTER than your plan. Always!

The clay cannot challenge the potter, but the clay can ACT so that the potter will CHANGE.

11For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
