Matt Redman’s dad died when Matt was 7 years old. A few years later, he found out that his father had committed suicide. Like any young boy, he wondered why. Was it something that he had done? Did his father not love him enough to stay?

Around this time, Matt went with his mother to a Palau festival in London, England. There, I spoke about how the love of God the Father is perfect, even if earthly fathers make mistakes. There Matt realized that God was his father, and he was God’s little kid. His earthly father was gone, but his heavenly father loved him and wanted him to come home.

After accepting Jesus into his life, Matt began writing songs and playing them in church. Now he’s written some of the most well-known worship songs that are sung around the world in many languages, in churches every week.

Some people’s earthly fathers are cruel. Some fathers are cold. Some fathers die or leave their families. But our heavenly Father loves us eternally with a perfect love. As 1 John 3:1 says, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” So we are. Let’s share this news with those around us who are seeking love and family. Let’s invite them into the family of God. God, our Father, never changes.
