The Power of Action

Listen Later

This episode is about the power of action, strategies, and how to connect to the flow to move forward in life.

Gamma brainwaves are 40 cycles per second and higher. They are associated with bursts of insight and high-level information processing.

Beta brainwaves are 14-40 cycles per second. This is the normal state of consciousness.

Alpha brainwaves are 14-7.5 cycles per second, and this is when we are in a state of relaxation or meditation.

Theta brainwaves are 7.5-4 cycles per second, which is a very deep state of meditation or light sleep..

Delta brainwaves occur when we are sleeping at 0-4 cycles per second.

We can get into the flow in many ways, and here are a few:

  • Meditation
  • Exercise
  • Looking at art
  • Being in nature
  • Doing something creative
  • Doing something fun
  • Having sex
  • Cooking
  • Doing any repetitive motion

Tips for Delegating:

  1. Carefully vet the person you select for this task to make sure they will deliver on what you are asking for. If you need a contract, make sure you get one and have it signed before work starts!
  2. Give clear instructions that make sense to them. You need to communicate in a way where they understand your task.
  3. Set clear and timelined goals for when you want the task to be completed so this person meets your expectations.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • If 100% represents what you do all the time and 0% represents never doing something, are you an action taker? What’s the percentage of you taking action and what’s the percentage if you’re an avoider or procrastinator? What tasks do you avoid doing?
  • I used to do other undesirable tasks, anything and everything that I hated, before doing my taxes. Then I realized I had to reframe my thinking about doing my taxes because I have to do them every year and you might as well make it into a positive experience. I made it into a kind of meditation and thought about all the stuff I do in a year and thought of it as keeping a journal in which I could track and be grateful for all the experiences I’d had that year.
  • I was a procrastinator, then I realized that the stress of starting things at the last minute didn’t mean I was doing good work. I needed to relax and start earlier to get into the flow. Then I found that if I knew the benefits of doing that task I found it was a lot easier to tune in with the flow.
  • When you do things that makes you relaxed, ask yourself “what happens next?” Often you’ll get a feeling, observation or intuition that’s going to give you insight. But, be patient with yourself.
  • Once you know what those actions are, divide them into tasks that you’re excited about and ones that you’re not. Put the exciting ones in your calendar and the ones you’re not onto a to do list. Schedule them while taking into account that your schedule needs to incorporate the time required to get them done. If you don’t complete the task in the time you’ve put aside, put it back in until it gets done. Avoid scheduling tasks when you’re tired or need to spend time with family/friends. Enjoy the good feeling that comes with completing a task.

BEST MOMENTS

"Are you an action taker, or are you an avoider/procrastinator?"

"When people think they’re going to get what they want they dedicate the drive and the energy to make that happen."

"The flow manifests when our brain waves are in alpha, or sometimes theta, state. A state of calm, peace, meditation and relaxation."

"Make sure you do less appealing tasks at a time when you have the most energy."

"Delegate tasks you aren’t adept or skilled at to someone who is. Money shouldn’t be an obstacle. Spending money is a sign to yourself that you care about yourself enough to free up your time and energy to do the things you enjoy doing."
