The MOVEit incident is the result of a major cyber event involving federal agencies and corporations around the world. The threat actor behind this incident has threatened to publish sensitive information acquired through the vulnerability. Please consider taking the following actions recommended by the Social Security Administration and credit bureaus.

  • Closely monitor credit reports.
  • Obtain a free copy of your credit report, which you’re entitled to once every 12 months, from each of the three major credit reporting agencies: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.
  • Place a fraud alert on your accounts by contacting one of the credit reporting agencies; a fraud alert at one of the agencies will automatically notify the other two. A fraud alert tells creditors to contact you before opening any new accounts or before making changes to existing accounts.
  • Freeze your credit at each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Agencies will require personal authorization before approving any credit application.
  • If you believe you are a victim of identity theft, immediately file a police report and notify the Federal Trade Commission via identitytheft.gov
  • Request to block electronic access to Social Security, which you can learn more about via https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10220.pdf
  •

www.intellius.com is a site where you can find out criminal records, addresses, family members, liens and more information about people.

Report, block and delete are the steps for comments from scammers!

Notify, report fake profiles and tell friends are steps for fake profiles!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • In hacks some or all of your information can be stolen: you name, your social security number, maybe the names of your relatives, where you live. This stuff can be taken and sold on the Dark Web where people can take your identity and open up credit cards in your name and all kinds of shenanigans. People could try to get access to the titles of properties that you own, shut off your utilities or open their own all in your name. The prospects are frightening.
    • Sometimes people will have part of your information that they’ve bought off the dark web and then they’re going to ‘data mine’ you for the rest of it. They could ‘encounter’ you on a dating website and ask for the names of your relatives or pets for passwords. You need to be aware that these things (data mining on dating sites and identity theft in other areas) are connected, these things are often done by the same people or sold between each other on the Dark Web.
    • If you think you’ve been a victim of identity theft, you should immediately file a police report and notify the Federal Trade Commission. You can also request to block electronic access to social security.
    • One of the benefits of social media is staying connected with people, which is great for networking, business, maintaining emotional connections, or finding people you knew back in high school and learning. But, the downside is if something goes wrong all those people that you’re friends with could be affected too. A hacker could get into your account and send friend requests to all of your friends, these people could accidentally give access to that hacker who could then take their information of try to con them. You don’t want to be the gateway. So, change your password straight away and post that you’ve been hacked (make sure to click on the 3 dots and make sure it’s set to friends only to see this post. If it’s set to public scamming bots contact you with links to tell your how to fix it but actually lead you to sites that can mine your data.
