In this podcast episode, the guest, Bettina M. Jones, shares her experiences and insights from her 20-year corporate career and her journey as a woman of color. She discusses the challenges she faced, including being the only person of color in the room and the need to prove herself repeatedly in her career.
Bettina highlights the unfairness of expecting 18-year-olds to make lifelong career decisions and shares her personal experience of pursuing a degree in travel and tourism business management without fully understanding her options at that age.
She also talks about the importance of confidence and courage in her journey. Confidence, she believes, is an inner knowing that she can accomplish tasks, while courage is about stretching herself and challenging authority when necessary.
Bettina mentions the significance of seeking support, mentors, sponsors, and allies, especially as a person of color in the workplace. She discusses her experiences working with different managers, including those who were black women and how these relationships impacted her career.
Throughout the conversation, Bettina emphasizes the value of collaboration over competition and the importance of supporting and connecting with other women of color in professional settings. She shares stories of resilience and determination in navigating the corporate world as a woman of color. Tune in now.
