1. Confess to God Specifically, Not Generically.  Biblical confession names the specific sin before the specific God who was specifically offended by it. 
2. Distinguish between guilt and shame. Guilt is the conviction that I have done something wrong. Shame is the conviction that I am something wrong. Biblical confession addresses guilt and refuses the lie of shame. 
3. Confess to people when appropriate.   
4. Forsake the sin, not just confess it.   
5. Seek help when confession alone is not breaking the pattern.
