THE DISCIPLE LIFE

The Power of Godly Character

Listen Later

Character is one of the greatest forces in the world. It is the foundation upon which a righteous life is built and the true measure of a man’s worth in the sight of God. The Bible tells us, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold” (Proverbs 22:1). While reputation is how others perceive us, character is who we truly are before God.

Many people labor for the approval of men, carefully crafting an image that pleases society, yet neglecting the state of their soul. Jesus warned of this when He said, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess” (Matthew 23:25). True righteousness is not about appearing holy before others but about being pure before God.

In the pursuit of life’s goals, whether it be wealth, success, or influence, we must never forget the necessity of building godly character. The world values power and prosperity, but God values integrity and faithfulness. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

In an age of deceit, corruption, and moral decay, the greatest need is for men and women of unshakable character—those who stand for truth, even when it is unpopular. The Bible tells us that “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him” (Proverbs 20:7). It is not riches or titles that make a person truly great, but the content of their heart and the depth of their faith.

When character is absent, we drift into moral weakness. Like a ship without a rudder, we are tossed about by the waves of temptation and compromise. The Psalmist declared, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way” (Psalm 37:23). A man without character is a slave to his own desires, but a man of principle walks in the strength of the Lord.

Money does not define a man. Many of the wealthiest individuals have been bankrupt in integrity. But true riches are found in a heart devoted to God, in hands that do righteousness, and in a life that reflects Christ. Let us strive to be men and women of character, seeking not the applause of men, but the approval of God. For in the end, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21) is worth more than all the treasures of the world.
