Tips:

#1 Give yourself grace.  Some goals take more than one year to achieve. Give yourself time and space to achieve goals, and the trip to achieving them may be circuitous, and that is okay.

#2 Clear negative emotions--exercise, journal them and burn the list or other exercises to clear unproductive energy.

#3 Focus on your goals: Visualise or think about your goals, using a variety of media--focus wheels, art, voice memo lists, vision boards.

#4 Recognize any resistance. Is it valid resistance based on a legitimate feeling, or unproductive resistance based on insecurities or negative thoughts? Clear unproductive resistance.

#5 Create your action steps. Then do them!

  • New Years are a time of transition. A lot of people see them as a time to shift into something new, a different space, a time to think about what to create in the upcoming 12 months, look at resolutions or words that will categorise the year that’s coming up. It’s a time to pause, if you can, and reflect on what’s coming up.
  • Sometimes creating goals is more nuanced than simply writing them down and the steps to get to it. Sometimes we step backwards to go forward, sometimes we step sideways, sometimes we take a long detour that eventually gets us back to our goal. It’s OK if moving into a space that you want to get to is not necessarily straightforward. Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to accept that it’s not always going to go the way it should.

  • Sometimes we get distracted from our goals by emotional upset, there are a lot of things that push our buttons in life. When you get emotionally triggered it’s important to breathe and do some kind of grounding activity to try to shift the emotional energy out of your body. That could be exercise, yoga, taking a walk, doing art, talking to a friend, writing down your feelings on a piece of paper and burning it. Then, imagine you’re achieving that goal. That gets your mind into a state where you start finding creative answers to how you’re going to achieve that goal.
