Hillary: Why are stories so important? Why are they so important to our families?
Jen: I don’t think there’s a better way to teach anything or experience anything that through stories. There are scientific studies that as you are reading a story, you are participating in it. I read the scriptures, you see there are a lot of powerful things being taught through the pages of a book. This applies to movies and other forms of media, but our brains are wired to learn through story. The only other way we can have these experiences is to read about them. It increases our empathy, it changes us as people and it helps us grown and be different than we ever would have. It’s also our responsibility to create a story. I try to love the people on the other side of the pages more than my book. Be careful what stories you let yourself live through and learn from them. What is this story doing to change me?
Hillary: Do you have some tips for families telling stories or reading together?
Jen: We try to retell family stories, stories about our own family. It gives us more family identity. During COVID that kind of fell apart and we have been binge watching movies. We can make connections to those in our own way. They can have power, too. I wish there was more book reading, but we are still doing this together and it has a place too. If it is important for you to have stories together, you make it part of the routine. When the kids were little, we would read together every night.
