Listen Later

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by canine-partnered energy coach and author of ‘Let Your Dog Lead’, Michael Overlie. The pair discuss how intuitive dogs are and how we should take notice of how dogs live and how that can help us in our life journeys.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • I’ve done all kinds of interesting things before I decided to completely change who I was and remember who I was. I was an EMT for about 15 years, I was a ski instructor, I was a commercial SCUBA diver, I did all these great things and a lot of them were rooted in searching for who I was. The whole way through I’d been grateful to have dogs with me my whole life and I didn’t realise until later on the lessons they were actually teaching me and the things they’d given me along the way that made me who I am.
  • About 5 years ago my older brother passed away and that tore me up and cracked me open. I grieved, I was sobbing and writhing in pain after his death. It was an incredible experience. What that did was allowed me to realise I didn’t like who I was and how I was showing up in the world – I was angry, insecure, all these things that had been going on forever but I didn’t realise. This sent me on a journey of self-exploration, healing and growth and at that time I witnessed my dog doing some things and I realised he’d been trying to show me this stuff all along, so I started working backwards through different periods of my life and found that I hadn’t been paying attention.
  • I think time and exposure to humans has allowed them to read us better. Dogs are masters at body communication. Most of their communication between themselves and other animals occurs without them ‘talking’, they can pick up on the slightest cue: the way we stand, the way we hold a leash, our energy, all these things come into play when an animal is in communication with a human.
  • After my brother’s passing I had a dog named Derby. He was phenomenal, he was funny, he was goofy, but he was able to help me tap into things that I had never realised before. I started meditating and the next thing I know he would join me and spend that time and hold that space with me. Instead of wanting to be outside, he’d just come and sit, so he started to teach me to be really present, I could just be, I don’t have to be doing anything. I started asking myself what else am I not listening to or picking up on, so I spent more time watching what he did throughout his day. I noticed that while I was working he’d go to the door so I’d open it and he’d just stand there, then I realised that I needed to go outside and take a break, after coming back inside I’d feel so much better. He taught me to notice this better and not just pound through.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I think that animals are wise, they have this wisdom about themselves and the world, they don’t put stuff on top of themselves. The wolves thought “Oh my gosh, these humans need help! We need to get over there and help then, who’s first?”’

‘As human we have these pretty big, powerful egos. Sometimes they work for us and sometimes they don’t. We like to think we’re in control of all these things, and I think that brings us a lot of misery.’

‘I think we’re able to let our guard down around our dogs than  any other creatures. That little bit of vulnerability allows a different type of access. People who you stay walled off from can’t get close to you, people who are close to us have a little more access, but with our dogs we can let our guard way down.’

‘People don’t realise that they are a part of what their animal is doing and why they might have certain behaviours.’

ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
