A discussion around how communication styles and sounds impact whose voice gets heard and why. Dialect based on geography, culture, religion… and of course race and sex. Who gains respect and trust? Do men's voices project a different type of confidence or authority? Do I sound like a black girl on the phone? What does that even mean?
Do we already know what confidence, competence, and authority sound like… or are we just listening for what's familiar? Is linguistic style another version of bias that needs to be identified, discussed and addressed or simply acknowledged?
