The Power Of Women’s Rights – Replay

Listen Later

On this episode Ariel talks about the upcoming election in the US that will determine the course of women’s rights and the rights of other populations for decades to come. In this episode, she reshares the history of women’s voting rights and how hard won they were. Thousands of women and men worked for decades so that women could vote, I do hope that you’ll exercise your right to vote this week and make you voice heard. Your vote matters.

A video about the history of women's rights. A Brief History of Women's Rights

8/26/1920: When the federal government certified states’ ratification of the 19th amendment pertaining to voting rights for women, after decades of the Suffragettes lobbying for the right to vote.  White women gained the right to vote, but women of color were discriminated against and prevented from voting by state laws for many years.

"After the 19th amendment passed, Black women did vote and run for office in New York, as opposed to many states that passed state and local laws disenfranchising them. But Native American women and Asian American women were barred from voting due to other federal citizenship laws: Native women until 1924 and some Asian women until the 1950s." Roe Versus Wade, Explained:

"States are allowed to regulate a wide variety of actions in the interest of protecting people. But the Constitution limits the states’ rights to regulate. One of those limits is based on an individual’s right to liberty. In Roe v. Wade, McCorvey (Roe) argued the Constitution protected her liberty to choose to have an abortion, above the state’s right to regulate abortion."

"A woman's choice to have an abortion outweighs the state's concern for pre-natal life--up to the point of viability." (This is when the fetus can survive on it's own outside the womb.)

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued a 7–2 decision in favor of "Jane Roe" (Norma McCorvey) holding that women in the United States had a fundamental right to choose whether to have abortions without excessive government restriction and striking down Texas's abortion ban as unconstitutional.

The Equal Rights Amendment has never become part of the Constitution of the United States:

The late Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia addressed this clearly in an interview in the Atlantic in 2011 where he said, “Certainly the Constitution does not require discrimination on the basis of sex. The only issue is whether it prohibits it. It doesn’t.” This is exactly why we need the ERA.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • All women in the United States, and all over the world, need to know that their ability to make decisions for their lives are being eroded, and it’s a significant threat. Normally I don’t talk about negative things like this, but you do need to know that this issue and what you do now and in the next six months, before and at the mid-term elections, is going to make a huge difference for women for years or even decades to come.
  • Row vs Wade became law in 1973, this was a court case which gave women a higher access to deciding what was happening with her body than the State’s ability to decide what was happening with her body when she was pregnant.
  • According to studies, women don’t feel like they have equal opportunities, access to leadership, they feel like they’re not taken as seriously and a lot of times they don’t get access to higher paid jobs, the glass ceiling is real in a lot of professions.
  • One in three female rape victims recorded experienced rape for the first time between the ages of 11-17 years old and one in eight before the age of 10. If you think about it, 20% of women have experienced sexual violence, it’s terrifying.

BEST MOMENTS

“This episode is not about politics, it’s about rights. There’s a difference.”

“There’s a drop in men getting education, and it’s a serious issue.”

“The covid pandemic set women back 30 years because some left their jobs to look after their kids and some of them aren’t going to go back.”

“Voting is one of many crucial tools in the activist’s toybox. Women have often sought change through voting or running for office, but they’ve also worked behind the scenes in government and pushed for change through grass-roots activism.”
