The Power Play To Get New Arenas Built

When the Rogers Place arena opened in downtown Edmonton in September 2016, it was with some fanfare and spectacle, however, in the years leading up the opening, rumours of manipulation, secret deals, and corporate greed surrounded the project. A new book called "Power Play: Professional Hockey and the Politics of Urban Development" tells a dramatic story about clashing priorities where sports, money, and municipal power meet. The three co-authors present an account of the machinations that got the arena and the adjacent Ice District built, with a price tag of more than $600 million. Jay Scherer is Professor of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation and together with co-authors, David Mills (former History professor at the UofA) and Linda Sloan McCulloch (former Edmonton city councillor) have put together this new account. On Wednesday night, October 23, they will be at Audrey's Books in Edmonton to officially launch "Power Play." and Jay Scherer spoke with Russell in the Daybreak studio.
