Day By Day: Spiritual Practices that Shape Our Lives

The Practice of Prayer

Rev. Shuler Sitsch

June 21, 2026

What is prayer really for?

In this sermon, Rev. Shuler Sitsch begins the series Day By Day: Spiritual Practices that Shape Our Lives by looking at the practice of prayer through Luke 11:5-13. Jesus teaches us to ask, seek, and knock, but prayer is not simply about getting God to give us what we want. Prayer shapes us by drawing us closer to the heart of God and teaching us to pray, “Thy Kingdom come.”

As we practice prayer, we become more aware of God’s kingdom around us and more ready to participate in God’s work of justice, mercy, compassion, generosity, humility, and care for the poor, the stranger, the broken, and the oppressed.

Guiding Question:

How does prayer shape us to desire what God desires?
