The Presence of the Encourager

Revelations 1:9-20

Background: 

1.   The world around him:

a.   Ver 9, “in the tribulation.”

b.   Ver 9, “the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

c.   Ver 10, “in the Spirit 

“a state of ecstasy where he is able to receive a revelation from God.”

“being carried beyond normal physical senses”

d.   Ver 10, “on the Lords day.”

OT: “day of the Lord” When God bring final deliverance to the world

John may realize he is not only in the Spirit but he is in a future state

2.   John’s Mentality:

John is in desperate need of this vision of Christ,

God always prepares the vessel before he fills it 

ILL: God giving me a message about Naaman, years before I was to preach

Q- How many revelations have we missed because we did not allow God to prepare our vessel?

a.   90 years old, has been exiled to the island of Patmos

b.   Doesn’t know what his future holds

c.   Uncertain about the conditions of the Churches

d.   Feelings of: abandonment, scared, uncertain, injustice, anger

Ver 10 “I heard behind me a loud voice”

3.   The Voice:

a.   Ver 11, I am 

God told Moses tell them “I am” has sent you.

Exodus 3:14: “I am that I am.” “Tell them I am has sent you.”

“The significance of the name of God given in Exodus constitutes the idea that the “I am” reveals God as the being who is absolutely self-existent, He does not just existent, He existent because He existent.”

·        He is the final authority, He has the final word

4.   Jesus Conveys this assurance to John:

b.   Ver 11, “the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last.”

Jesus addresses all the emotional needs of John before he is able to give him the revelation:

1.   The need for security: “the Last”

2.   The need for stability: no beginning and no end without me

3.   The need for Trust: I created all things
