The price for Christ's discipleship (Monday 1st Week OT, Jan 11, 2021)

Listen Later

Today’s gospel shows how Jesus called his first disciples as he began his public ministry. This passage will leave an unforgettable impression on young people who feel the Lord's calling to his work and vineyard. However, this passage also teaches all of us a simple truth in our journeys of faith. It is abandonment for Christ. Or it can be called detachment from the world. In other words, we cannot follow Jesus without giving up things as the first disciples left their livelihood and families. This may sound simple and plain. Indeed, abandonment and detachment are fundamental to Christ’s discipleship. But they are very difficult virtues to master. Followers of Christ are daily tested and challenged of these virtues throughout their faith journeys.

The most seductive and insidious lie Satan ceaselessly tells us is that we can have both the world and Christ. This lie is nothing new. He tricked Eve by promising that she could eat the forbidden fruit and would not die. Satan lied to her that she could become like God but still live in the Garden of Eden. Satan tells us that we can enjoy all the good things in the world but still enter heaven. He whispers to our ears that we can indulge ourselves in pleasure but be faithful to our Lord. He draws a map to heaven without a cross.
Children know they will have toothaches if they eat too many candies all the time. It is not possible to stay healthy and to always satisfy appetites at the same time. There was a limit even in the Garden of Eden. To follow the Way of Christ toward heaven, we have many things to give up. To be with Jesus together in heaven, we should be able to embrace our crosses. A true cross demands sacrifices – self-abandonment and detachment.
