What follows - bonding, secrets, and ultimately tragedy - reveal truths to both teens and guru that none are fully prepared to confront.

it's just great
it's an excellent exploration into the middling of advertising as a metaphor for searching for purpose. the main character is cleverly crafted, using nonchalance/apathy to hide the disdain and embarrassment of already knowing his 'self truths' while still using introspection as an additional foil to find them. it's an interesting journey. if you've ever worked in advertising, you'll find it ever more apt as it touches on many of the principle-crushing compromises you make for your client, for your career. it's just a terribly dynamic read; you should give it a go.
Somewhere meets nowhere....
So at first I think this short story is headed in a certain direction, but I am wrong. Then...I am sure I know where it is headed now, and I am wrong again. I found it interesting simply for the fact that I never knew where it was headed, and the text kept entertained and reading. I liked it but am also glad it wasn't a full-length book. I couldn't have stayed with it that long.
Clever, wise because it isn't
THE PROBABLE OUTCOMES took a bit to win me over--which was briefly worrying, considering the length--but by the end of the story I decided I was impressed.
The prose here is pretty thorny. Some of it is rough, some of it is awkward. Some of the internal monologues fall flat. Much of the message, even, is sterile and overused. The ending is a giant cliche. It'd be pretty easy to do a hack job with this material. But what gets me in the end is that this story never takes itself too seriously. It strikes me as something out of Vonnegut--it abuses the cliches it contains in an attempt to advance the message. And it doesn't totally succeed, but watching the attempt is definitely interesting.
This is worth the read for that, if nothing else.
The Probable Outcomes
The title sounded interesting but the story was disappointing. Just when the main character starts to get interesting the story ends. I'm sure this novel is someone's idea of deep and insightful. Perhaps if you area total pessimist they may have a point. I personally would not recommend this book.
great title that gives a hint to the author's intent
I find myself reminded of the narrator's voice and thoughts long after reading the story. He tickled my mind by suggesting that I notice the cliches we live with and using them as a kind of twist in the narrative. An interesting and worthwhile read.
