Slavery is old.
In 1776, it was a global institution. No country prior to the American Founding had figured out how to end it. But the Americans, by the light of the ideas that fueled their own revolution, came to see the wrongness of slavery and went to extraordinary lengths to end it, at great costs in money, blood, and sacrifice. No subject better reveals the goodness of America than the story of slavery.
