The Profitable Business of Inventing Holidays

Listen Later

If you're a corporation with something to sell, creating fake holidays is incredibly lucrative. This mini-documentary explores how Mothers Day got hijacked, how you can purchase a national holiday for your product, and why we're all just going along with these fake holidays.   There is a term called 'Hallmark holidays' that refers to holidays that were created in order to sell more. And whilst Hallmark specifically are not necessarily responsible for this concept, there are now a ridiculous amount of invented 'holidays' rooted in pure commercialism.   From a business perspective, I fully respect it. But I also think it's a fun rabbit hole to go down, so sit back and enjoy as we explore the absurdity (and commercial genius) of creating fake holidays.
