In this episode a story that will blow your mind. In the 1950s, researchers were studying Japanese macaque monkeys on Koshima Island. They were providing these monkeys with sweet potatoes, but the potatoes were covered in sand and dirt. One young female monkey named Imo made a breakthrough discovery. Instead of just brushing off the sand, she started washing the potatoes in a nearby stream to clean them properly.

At first, only Imo knew this technique. But gradually, her family members started copying her behavior. Then their friends learned it. Slowly but surely, more and more monkeys on the island began washing their potatoes. But here's where it gets absolutely mind-blowing.

When the number of monkeys who knew this technique reached a critical mass - what researchers called the "hundredth monkey" - something extraordinary happened. Monkeys on other islands, with no physical contact with the Koshima Island monkeys, spontaneously began washing their potatoes too. They had no way of seeing this behavior, no way of learning it through normal means, yet they suddenly started doing it.
