Welcome to Episode 7 of The Pursuit: The Why.
Over the last 7 episodes, we've covered our whole journey. The foundations, the brand, the money, the sales, the marketing, the people, the whole lot. Which leaves one question that not enough people stop to actually answer.
What are you building all of this for?
This is a bit more of an introspective episode of the series. We get into what success actually looks like when you strip away the highlight reel, and we chat a bit more about what our goals are, and where we go from here.
Lifestyle, legacy, freedom, and why the version of success most people are chasing isn't always the one that actually makes them happy when they get there.
We talk about building in your 20s, the sacrifices that come with it, the moments that make it worth it, and what we each want our lives to actually look like when the business is running the way we want it to.
Or at least what we think we want it to look like...
No frameworks or tactics. Just two young lads being real about why we're doing what we're doing, and what we hope it all adds up to.
Thanks for listening to Series 1. This is just the beginning.
Welcome to Episode 6 of The Pursuit: Building a Team.
Last episode, we covered marketing and paid leads. The work is coming in consistently. Which means at some point, you physically cannot do it all yourself anymore. This is where most business owners either level up or hit a ceiling they can't break through.
Hiring your first person is one of the scariest moves you'll make. Hiring the wrong people after that can nearly sink you. Building a team that actually runs without you? That's the whole game.
In this episode we get into who to hire first, when to do it, and what most people get completely wrong about it - all from our own experiences.
We also talk about what it really takes to lead a team. Culture, retention, the hard conversations, goal setting, and giving people a reason to stay and grow with you.
Jordan has built a 20+ person operation from the ground up. Saxon has scaled a team while running a business that serves hundreds of others. Between the two of us, we've made enough hiring mistakes to fill an entire episode.
This one is for anyone who knows they need to stop being the bottleneck in their own business.
Let's get into it.
Welcome to Episode 5 of The Pursuit: Marketing and Paid Ads!
Last episode we talked sales. Converting the leads in front of you and tightening up your process. But there's no point in knowing how to convert anything without a consistent stream of people actually coming to you. That's what this episode is about.
Most business owners either spend nothing on marketing and rely entirely on word of mouth, or they throw money at ads with no strategy and wonder why it doesn't work. There's a better way.
We get into how to actually generate consistent inbound, the best platforms to use, why choosing a niche changes everything, and the mistakes we see business owners make over and over again when it comes to putting themselves out there.
We also talk about when it makes sense to invest in an agency, when you're better off doing it yourself, and what to look for either way.
Both of us have figured this out the hard way. Saxon from the agency side working with hundreds of businesses, Jordan from the inside running his own. Between the two of us, we've seen what works and what's just expensive noise.
Let's get it!
Welcome to Episode 4 of The Pursuit: Sales.
Last episode we covered the numbers. Getting your cashflow under control and your finances in order. Now the leads are coming in. The question is, are you actually converting them?
Most business owners think they have a lead problem. In most cases, they have a sales problem.
In this episode, we get into what a real sales process actually looks like. Speed to lead, how to follow up without being annoying, closing, handling objections, and why the way you show up before you even walk through the door determines whether you win the job...or not.
We talk about tracking your numbers, setting expectations early, and a mindset shift that changes everything.
Both of us have won jobs we probably shouldn't have and lost jobs we definitely should have. This episode is about closing that gap.
Enjoy!
Welcome to Episode 3 of The Pursuit: Cashflow and Financial Management.
Last episode we talked brand. Building your presence, getting people to give a damn. Now people are noticing you, the work is coming in, and the money is starting to move. Which means if you don't understand your numbers, things can go sideways very fast.
This is probably the least sexy episode of the series. We know that. But it might be the most important one.
We break down the stuff most young or new business owners learn the hard way. The difference between revenue and actual cash in your pocket, why the ATO will humble you if you're not ready for it, how to set up payment schedules that protect your cashflow, and why company money is not your money.
We talk margins, tax, cash reserves, forecasting for the slow months, and why getting a great accountant early is one of the best investments you'll ever make.
Both of us have made some financial mistakes running our businesses. This episode exists so you don't have to make the same ones.
Enjoy!
Welcome to Episode 2 of The Pursuit: Building a Brand!
Last episode, we covered The Foundations. Getting the systems in place, setting up your GMB, building the base. Now that you've got something to show the world, it's time to make sure the world actually gives a damn.
In this episode, we get into what a brand actually is, why it matters way more than most early-stage business owners realise, and how to start building one before you feel ready. Because the people who wait until everything is perfect are still waiting.
We talk personal brand vs company brand, what to post, who it's actually for, and why authenticity isn't just a buzzword. It's the reason people choose you over the next guy with the same service and a similar price.
We share what building our own brands looked like, what we got wrong early, and why starting earlier is the single biggest thing we'd tell ourselves if we could go back.
Whether you're a tradie, a service business owner, or just someone trying to build something worth following, this one's for you!
Welcome to the first official Episode of The Pursuit: The Foundations
Every business starts somewhere, and for most of us it wasn't glamorous.
In this episode, we go back to day one: the side hustle phase, the Google My Business listing you set up on your lunch break, the website you built yourself, and the socials you posted on before anyone was watching.
We break down what the foundations actually looked like for each of us, the systems we wish we'd had sooner, and the mistakes that cost us time and money early on.
We get pretty real about reinvesting everything back into the business before you pay yourself a cent, and what we'd tell our younger selves if we could do it all again.
If you're in the early stages of building your business, whether it be a trades/service based business, marketing agency, or anything in between - this is where it starts.
Welcome to The Pursuit Podcast!
We're Saxon and Jordan, and we're kicking things off with an intro episode: who we are, what we've actually built, and why we're doing this show.
Over the next few episodes, we will be breaking down how to go from side hustle to a real, functioning business, based on what's actually worked for us (and what didn't):
Ep 1: The Foundations — Google My Business, website, socials, and surviving on nothing while you reinvest everything back in
