The Race for the Sausage - Alice Guy - 1907

Listen Later

An early silent comedy by Alice Guy. It's very simple and straightforward, and as a result it is possibly the greatest film of the first decade of the 1900s. The chase begins when a crafty dog snatches a string of sausages from a butcher's stall. The furious butcher gives chase, but his frantic sprint through the streets quickly devolves into a domino effect of collisions with a growing crowd of irritated pedestrians. Soon, a single-minded pursuit of a pilfering pup escalates into a massive, chaotic mob of people all running for a reason most of them have already forgotten

Alice Guy BlachΓ© was a cinematic pioneer of monumental significance, not merely as the first female filmmaker but as one of the very first directors, male or female, to recognize and harness the power of film as a medium for storytelling. Beginning in 1896 with La FΓ©e aux Choux (The Cabbage Fairy), arguably the first narrative film ever made, she moved beyond the simple actuality films of her contemporaries to create works with plot, character, and imaginative scope. Over a prolific career spanning two decades and two continents, she explored and pioneered techniques in synchronized sound, color tinting, and special effects, directing, producing, or supervising hundreds of films that established the very grammar of narrative cinema, yet her foundational contributions were largely overlooked by film history for much of the 20th century.
