Today, Liz joins me on the Real Sober Moms!

Growing up, the adults in Liz’s family would often congregate at her family’s home to drink and ‘let loose’, resulting in an environment where Liz felt unsafe and invisible. Despite that discomfort, she learned to equate alcohol with fun, and emotional connection. This difficult combination of emotions led to challenges for Liz in high school when her father was diagnosed with cancer. By the time he passed away early in her college career, she was drinking regularly as a way to escape and manage her grief.

Liz’s relationship with alcohol began to change when she became a mom herself. She realized that she wanted something for her kids that she didn’t have as a child: she wanted them to feel safe and seen. It became clear to her that alcohol was not going to serve her in that mission. In fact, it was going to stand in the way. She decided at that moment to leave alcohol behind. She has never looked back!
