Thanksgiving is one of those holidays with what seems like a pretty clear origin story: the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts, where pilgrims celebrated the first harvest in their new home with members of the Wampanoag tribe who already lived there.

But Dr. Joe Stahlman, a professor at the University of Buffalo and a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians, says it didn’t actually go down that way. In this holiday edition of The Debrief, he talks with Michael Gargiulo about what really happened that first Thanksgiving, and why Americans should still celebrate the holiday.
