Awakened to Deliver – The Reality of Hell, Day 2: What the Bible Says Hell Is
Key Verse: Mark 9:48 — “where their worm does not die, and the fire is not extinguished.”
Episode Highlights
• Jesus spoke about hell more than anyone else—not to terrify but to save.
• Scripture uses three main words: Sheol, Hades, and Gehenna.
– Sheol (Hebrew): the place of the dead in the Old Testament; divided between comfort and torment (Ps 16:10; Eph 4:8-10).
– Hades (Greek): the temporary place of the wicked dead, released at the Great White Throne judgment (Rev 20:13-14).
– Gehenna: from the Valley of Hinnom, once a site of child sacrifice and later Jerusalem’s burning refuse heap—Jesus’ picture of eternal fire (2 Kgs 23:10; Mark 9:48).
• Hell is described as “a furnace of fire” (Matt 13:42), “outer darkness” (Matt 22:13), “black darkness forever” (Jude 13), “the bottomless pit” (Rev 9:2), and “the second death” (Rev 20:14).
• Fire represents judgment; darkness represents separation. Together they reveal the horror of existence apart from God.
• Whether the fire is literal or symbolic, its reality is worse than imagination.
• Hell’s punishment is eternal—the same word used for eternal life (Matt 25:46; Rev 14:11).
• Love warns: Jesus described hell so we’d never have to go there (John 3:16).
• Hell reveals God’s justice; the cross reveals His mercy.
• Christ conquered death and holds the keys of Hades—salvation is still available to all who repent and believe.
