October 24, 2019Episode 155: The causes Of Suicide, Can Bacteria Make You Depressed? SoutzosWhy is teenage suicide sky rocketing? Is this really what modern society inspires in our young adults? Our own gut bacteria are crucial to our immune functioning and levels of inflammation in the body and can be affected by diet, stress, and light. Especially important now we are ending British Summer TIme. We discuss pressures on professional women and ask why are women becoming more depressed and anxious and having less children despite apparent greater emancipation? Or are they prisoners of political correctness?...more44minPlay
October 01, 2019Episode 154: What the main killer in the Western World is and what we can do about it. Stress. Soutzos. What is the purpose of eduction? Should private schools be banned? Divorce is the biggest stress in life. Why is marrying later in life likely to last? Even if this is true is it a good thing for society? Children learn to do business deals in the play ground and its called playing. Learning to let their opponent win sometimes. What is the biggest killer in the western world and how do we fix it? It is stress. This is the overwhelming confounding variable in modern psychiatric research. Most of the time people are not clinically depressed, they are feeling depressed and unhappy as they feel out of control of their lives. This explains a recent study that showed an antidepressant was not very good at improving depression but it was better at reducing anxiety....more45minPlay
September 23, 2019Episode 153: Why is politics in chaos? Extremes in the same party. Why is kindness more important than money and looks? SoutzosThe labour party is proposing to abolish private schools as well as censure the press. Extreme views like this arise in a free speach self serving democracy where structure is atomised by political correctness and without the moderating influence of structure the true extremes within people emerge and run riot. Of course the press should not have free speach. Why? Because the purpose of free speach is to be able to think in order to improve society. It is not a blunt self serving tool of lies and exaggeration to sell digital print space. The Hansard report concluded that the media are responsible for mis informing and exaggerating issues so that the populace have become cynical and misinformed. Furthermore what the press actually report on bears little resemblance to what is actually going on in the world. We pose the question: in a fight who do you want on your side? Boris Johnson or Theresa May? Enough said. We touch on a large topic of relationships where recent research shows that kindness is a virtue rated higher than looks and wealth by most people. We discuss this in more depth in our next podcast. Listen and all will be revealed....more37minPlay
September 21, 2019Episode 152: Stress is a bigger killer than diet or lack of exercise. Addiction and gambling. SoutzosWe discus a study that shows different emotions physically affect the shape of the heart in different ways. Emotion and by inference perception is so powerful that if you are well exercised and eating a model healthy diet stress will still ravage your mind and body. Managing stress is therefore more important than anything else in your life with respect to improving your mental and physical health. We discuss gambling including some statistics which prove that the betting houses know that they are taking advantage of vulnerable individuals, literally raping their lives. We discuss why traditional treatments for addiction do not work. Finally we discuss a quick win that all of us can apply every day to improve the quality of our lives. Listen and all will be revealed....more46minPlay
September 10, 2019Episode 151: Is one quarter the population addicted to prescription medication ? Can you create a legacy? SoutzosThere are alot of prescription drugs being prescribed but there is no need to be panicked by the headlines. This is just sensationalist as the next thing you read is that we are on 'potentially' addictive medication in contrast to the title! Furthermore antidepressants which up to 25% of the population may be put on at some point are not addictive. This is because although they do have a short withdrawal syndrome (often mild if at all but rarely severe) this is touted by the media as being additive. The fact is there is no craving and they are not medications of instant gratification such as substances of addiction. The fact is is that society is increasingly unhealthy of people. Suicide has gone up 40% in America in 20 years and after years of reduction is having an uptick in the UK. Poverty and social disintegration is to blame. Brexit is clearly going to cause social and economic upheaval. People like James o Brien and building their careers on stating the obvious and belittling those who think emotionally and cannot explain the crucial importance if brexit which is about maintaining our national and individual identities rather than further swirling down the plug hole of political correctness instant gratification and increasing social and ethnic divides. Of course those running the country almost lack the insight to capitalise on the psychological/social/economic opportunities for good that Brexit will provide. We also discuss how to create a legacy. The short answer is that you will fail if that is your goal....more45minPlay
September 04, 2019Topical Talkology: Episode 150: Is Boris being a leader or a tyrant? London is the Drug capital of Europe. Soutzos.Boris Johnson is trying to get something done in a political swamp of vested interest and disloyalty. The civil service run the UK and the only time Parliament has been tasked with making a decision it has wasted 3 years. Despite this the UK continues to run seamlessly suggesting that parliament is in fact redundant and that all that is needed is a strong leader and the civil service. At least the latter are trained for their jobs. That is far more effective than being elected to a job you are not trained to do....more45minPlay
August 11, 2019Episode 149: Happiness and Success Can Never Be Your Goals. Soutzos. What is confidence? Why do most of us lack it? Is it different to self esteem and what are determinants of self esteem? What makes us successful ? What makes as happy and how to we make ourselves happy? Certainly setting happiness as a goal is a recipe for stress and dissatisfaction. We address all these questions using the latest thinking and research on these topics....more41minPlay
July 20, 2019Episode 147 - Is Trump Racist Or Does He Simply Understand That People Are Fundamentally Racist? SoutzosOfcourse Trump is racist but then so are at least two of the women in the "Squad" as one has made anti Israel comments and another anti Jewish comments. If he was not racist he could have said that if anyone does not like it America then go somewhere they do like. However his comment is not actual proof of his racism rather he is seeking to inflame the silent majority of white people who are racist. Humans are all racist as we have evolved to like that which is familiar and reject that which is different. It is reflected in the need for corporate identity and the requirement to fit into that or to Football fans being eternal brothers with supporters of the same team but enemies of supporters of rival teams. The lunacy of this being exposed when England is playing abroad in which case enemies become brothers once more unified by National Identity. The manifestation of racism is the sign of poor leadership and government as shared values and National Identity (apart from religion) starts there. Trump's comment is therefore manipulative for personal gain and divisive. Much better to bolster the American Constitution and ensure Americans are united behind it and then tell anyone who does not like it to leave instead of having the need to criticize which is the enemy of structure and organisation unless it is confined to those whose have nothing to gain from free speach apart from improving society with no conflict of interest. Is there anyone like this? Not yet. At least in Medieval Times there was the Court Jester who was allowed to criticise the king or queen in order to keep them grounded. The price he paid was that he had to be am object of ridicule so others would never want to relate to him. Otherwise free speach would have damaged respect for the Monarchy and weakened the state....more46minPlay
July 13, 2019Episode 146: Should the Press Be Allowed To Hide Behind The Politically Correct Label of Free Speach? The police have had to warn the press against publishing anything else politically sensitive which could damage the prospects of UK as a whole . Is this an outrageous challenge to our treasured entitlement to free speech? This is as a result of the British Ambassador To America resigning this week as a result of his classified report being leaked to the press. Should the press be allowed to decide what to publish under the guise of free speech? If so should anyone be held accountable for the ramifications of press profiteering from apparently saleable digital print? The mere fact that the press stand to profit causes a conflict of interest in the decision of what is of public interest and what is just saleable. Therefore the politically correct mask of free speech supposedly allowing the press to print what they want is just that. A fallacy. In this case information was leaked that was protected by the Official Secrets Act and therefore the law was broken. The press then profited from the proceeds of breaking the law and published something that many people have said many times before and in so doing made it impossible for the ambassador to continue in his current role thus forcing his resignation (nothing to do with conservative leadership candidates supporting him or not -and indeed supporting him showed no knowledge of the fact he was no longer able to fulfil his role) as well as damaging the relationship between Britain and the USA at a critical time in Brexit. It achieved nothing positive and only destroyed just for some inches of saleable digital print. This is an example of all that is bad in today's press and shows they are not worthy of the privilege of free speech or even close to it. Indeed we argue that free speech as it stands only serves to challenge and weaken structure and order as it is usually inflammatory and emotion ridden which makes logical discussion and consensus a scientific impossibility. Would a corporation or indeed the military function with free speech ? Of course not. They would be weakened immeasurably . They function with clear identity structure and hierarchy . We say that free speech is important but only in specific well defined forums for rare people specifically engaged in bettering society with nothing to gain from it apart from the good that they do. Indeed an excellent example of this was the Court Jester who's job it was to say exactly what he though of the King or Queen and even ridicule them for it. The purpose being to remind them that they were human and fallible and not divine....more45minPlay
