Welcome back, Reds and Blues! When last you saw us here, we had audio issues that we didn’t know about in real time. Coupled with our European adventures, it’s been nearly 2 ½ months since we’ve shared this space. So, we’ve got quite a lot to discuss.
The Euros and the Copa have dominated summer entertainment so far, and we got to experience the early rounds firsthand. From arguably the best fan base at the tournament – Turkiye! – to a matchup of pre-tournament heavyweights, we saw 3 matches between Dortmund and Frankfurt. Using Essen as a home base, we also visited Gelsenkirchen’s fan fest and braved the Marienplatz full of Scottish fans in Munich.
Most of the games have been riveting, with 3 of 4 quarterfinals going to extra time and 2 being settled on penalties. The first round also saw only 1 scoreless draw (check this), so goals have been on display. Hopefully Spain v France and Netherlands v England will continue the trend.
Sadly, the Copa has not brought the same level of quality across the beautiful game. Poor pitches, poor sportsmanship, and a dismal performance from the USMNT have made it hard to follow at times. But American Jesse Marsch has led Canada into the semifinals against a heavily favored Argentina, and Uruguay’s upset of Brazil has them facing off against Colombia.
Little movement has been seen for either of our clubs so far in the summer transfer window, but United are beginning to make some moves after the new ownership met and sanctioned some transfers.
The USWNT has 2 upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Costa Rica before traveling to France for the summer Olympics. The Emma Hayes era is about to begin, and her recent comments about writing some new history bode well.
We’ll be trying to avoid extra time and penalties, so join us live from Chatham Tap Fishers at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, follow along on Facebook Live and YouTube Live, or catch us at your leisure on our other platforms listed below. Please like, subscribe, and comment wherever you choose to find us. CHEERS!
