This is the hair rising sequel to sci-fi master Murray Leinster's "The Mad Planet". Burl, our hero, still has to contend with the giant bugs and fungus; as well as even greater menaces!
"The sky grew gray and then almost white. The overhanging banks of clouds seemed to withdraw a little from the steaming earth. Haze that hung always among the mushroom forests and above the fungus hills grew more tenuous, and the slow and misty rain that dripped the whole night long ceased reluctantly. As far as the eye could see a mad world stretched out, a world of insensate cruelties and strange, fierce maternal solicitudes."

So-So Sequel
Murray Leinster's novellaThe Mad Planet, (originally published in 1920) is not much remembered today, but it was an important milestone in magazine science fiction, introducing loads of tropes that became staples of SF for decades. It's not a bad read, but you should definitely start with the earlier tale.
Good, but dated
The science of the day is a bit off by modern standards, but not a bad story. A variation of a post apocalypse story, with the Apocalypse being natural.
bad, so bad
Although this work claimed to be a sequel it was a bad oh so bad re-write of the very, very good original. why do people feel compelled to do this? Like a vandal putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa...for goodness sake this should be better labeled as not the work of the great master...
