In Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Red-Headed League," Sherlock Holmes investigates the peculiar case of Jabez Wilson, a pawnbroker hired for a high-paying but nonsensical job seemingly just because of his fiery red hair. When the sponsoring "League" abruptly dissolves, Holmes's suspicion is aroused. Through keen observation and deduction, he uncovers that the entire League was an elaborate hoax orchestrated by a cunning criminal (Wilson's assistant) to keep Wilson occupied and out of his shop for hours each day, providing cover to dig a tunnel from the shop's cellar into the vault of an adjacent bank, a scheme Holmes ultimately foils.
