Love Music More (with Scoobert Doobert)

The Rhythm of Craft / the Chaos of Creativity

Listen Later

Stop confusing creativity with your craft! You practice to clear the path for the muses, and when the muse arrives, you get out the way and run with them.

I’ve thought a lot about this tension while doing the guest pods with far more successful (and far more organized) mixing engineers than I. But we all have our own ways of doing it. Maybe by hearing my way, you’ll be inspired to try some new paths.

To practice for practices sake. And to leave practice at the door when it’s time to be an artist.

To use music theory as an (incredible) tool, but not as a crutch or a map.

And to work on your craft as often as possible, especially in those moments when you don’t feel inspired. I think that will help us both Love Music More!

Impelled to do so. Called to do creatively. Craft as that constant heartbeat, that tempo, that pulse. Don’t burn out. Find that balance. Fancy words. Physicalizing the music theory of common tones and of modulation. Segmenting. Enjoy the show. Even version control. Foraging for ingredients. To reexamine process. Able to derive some learnings. Can capture that moment of inspiration and that moment of improvisation. All at once. That middle thing. The lightning rod in the storm. 📡⚡
