In a recent verdict, the Supreme Court stated that the Right to Die with Dignity is a fundamental right of every individual, as an extension, it legalised passive euthanasia and approved a 'living will' or an advanced directive for terminally ill patients or those in an incurable vegetative state. The verdict which upheld individual rights was lauded by activists, but not everyone is happy since it poses larger spiritual, philosophical, religious and practical questions. Once made into a law, is this freedom likely to me misused? Will it put undue pressure on the medical fraternity? What about the contentious clause in the government's draft bill that allows for anyone over the age of 16 years to opt for passive euthanasia?
