The Righteousness of God (Romans 3:21-31)
How can we be right with a righteous God? The world around tells us that if you want to be accepted, It must be earned by your own performance. But the Bible teaches us that our own only hope of salvation depends on trusting entirely in what Jesus has done for us on the cross. Yet, how can God forgive guilty sinners and still be utterly righteous? And what about people who died before Christ came? Come and join us as we consider what has been called "the most important paragraph ever written in human history"!
This sermon was preached at Cross & Crown Church, Penang on 10th March 2024.
Introduction: How can we be right with a righteous God?
The argument so far
1. God’s righteousness comes through faith, not the law (21–23)
a. Faith not performance (21–22)
b. Promised in the Old Testament (22)
c. For all sinners: Jew & Gentile (22b–23)
2. God makes us right with him through the death of Jesus (24–25)
a. Justification (24a)
b. Grace (24b)
c. Redemption (24c)
d. Propitiation (25a)
3. The death of Jesus perfectly displays God’s righteousness (25b–26)
4. The right response is faith alone
5. Implications (27-31)
a. No boasting: The gospel humbles us (27–28)
b. No discrimination: The gospel unites us (29–30)
c. No lawlessness: The gospel transforms us (31)
