On this episode, our guest is Dr. Jovan Scott Lewis, anthropologist and an assistant professor of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also the author of Scammer’s Yard: The Crime of Black Repair. In Scammer’s Yaad, Dr. Lewis tells the story of three young and poor men striving to make a living in Montego Bay, where call centers and tourism are the two main industries in the struggling economy. We spoke to Dr. Lewis on the origin of lottery scamming in Jamaica, the rise of the practice and how it has provided agencies of reparation, crime  and violence; and societal satire in Jamaica.
