Dayton James Webber, a 27-year-old professional cornhole player and quadruple amputee, is facing charges of first-degree and second-degree murder following a fatal shooting in Maryland. The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, March 22, 2026, and resulted in the death of 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells, a resident of Waldorf who reportedly knew the athlete.The shooting allegedly took place inside a Tesla SUV that Webber was driving through La Plata. According to accounts from two witnesses who were seated in the back of the car, an argument erupted between Webber and Wells, who was in the front passenger seat. During the dispute, Webber allegedly shot Wells. Following the shooting, Webber reportedly stopped the vehicle and asked the back-seat passengers to help him unload the body from the car. When the witnesses refused and fled the scene to contact the police, Webber allegedly drove away with the victim still inside the vehicle. Approximately two hours later, Wells' body was discovered in a yard on Newport Church Road in Charlotte Hall.Following a multi-state search, authorities located Webber in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was arrested at a hospital while receiving treatment for an unspecified medical condition. He was charged as a fugitive from justice and is currently awaiting extradition to Charles County, Maryland, to face formal charges.Webber’s background as a celebrated professional athlete makes the allegations particularly striking to the public. He underwent a quadruple amputation at 10 months old after contracting a life-threatening bacterial infection that gave him only a 3% chance of survival. Defying medical expectations, he became an inspirational figure and the first quadruple amputee to compete professionally in the American Cornhole League (ACL). His athletic career included winning two Maryland state titles and a high-profile debut on ESPN in 2023. He also worked as a motivational speaker, often sharing his motto, "The world won't wait," to encourage others with disabilities to stay active.The case has prompted significant questions regarding how Webber was physically able to operate both a vehicle and a firearm. While the investigation is in its early stages, authorities have noted his demonstrated physical abilities, and past videos have resurfaced showing him handling and firing 9mm handguns and rifles. The ACL issued a statement describing the matter as extremely serious and clarified that Webber had not been an active participant in the league since late 2024.
