Sermon Notes—“The Rise of False Teachers”

May 1, 2016
“We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.”
Colossians 1:28 (NIV84)

Lesson Text

1But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; 3and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
2 Peter 2:1–3 (NASB95)

The Message:

There’s nothing new about false prophets and false teachers. As long as there’s TRUTH there will always be liars and deceivers.
11“Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many.
Matthew 24:11 (NASB95)

1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1 (NASB95)

False teaching is always dangerous, but even more so when it ORIGINATES in the church.

PARTIAL truth is still a lie.
29“I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.
Acts 20:29–30 (NASB95)

8“For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Do not let your prophets who are in your midst and your diviners deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams which they dream. 9‘For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them,’ declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 29:8–9 (NASB95)

False teaching is birthed when greed or some other form of idolatry has CAPTURED the HEART of the teacher.

It’s successful because it appeals to the same IDOLS that dwell in the hearts of the listeners.

18“But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.
Matthew 15:18 (NASB95)

15“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

Matthew 7:15–20 (NLT)

Since false teaching is a heart issue, PURSUING GODLINESS with all of your heart (1:5-10) will protect you from being victimized by false teaching.
