a lovely read
This is a tale about the old West before the Wild West beyond the Mississippi claimed that title back, when the revolver had not yet made its mark upon the land of sagebrush and sand. It is the bittersweet tale of a young boy who watches the murder of his father and becomes the dependent of a Ranger who has no truck with children but protects him nevertheless and brings him back toward his home in New York. While on the road, their adventures are perilous and many, but in the end the boy finds his way back to become a quiet and steady man who remembers the Ranger who helped him grow up
A boy stranded in early America
This book is interesting on two levels. First, it is the story of a gun, the origin of the Colt revolver, a pistol that allowed the holder to deliver multiple shots from a moving platform with only one hand. The technology is interesting without being too complex and boring for the reader. The viewpoint is appropriately neutral, neither too pro- or anti-gun. Second, and more important, it is a type of coming of age story about a boy on the frontier in the 1830s, a sort of eastern Huck Finn. If you enjoy historical fiction set in early America, I think you will find this book rewarding.
Enjoyable Adventure
The Road to Reckoning kept me involved but I did read it in one go on a flight between Melbourne and Shanghai.
Not being American the prose was okay to me so not sure if it was accurate or not.
The characters were believable and you really had sympathy for the 12 year old and what was up against him.
A good story overall.
A fun read.
It was an enjoyable read for me. I liked the historical references to the early 19th century frontier culture and the evolution of personal firearms. My only gripe is that the British author seems to share the British contempt for privately owned firearms, especially handguns.
grear read !
really enjoyed the book ; interesting characters, great presentation, lots of suspence. loved the narrative about the land and towns and historical points.
