What if the walls you've built to protect yourself are the same walls keeping people from truly knowing you?
In this episode of Role Model, Derek Peterson explores one of the most misunderstood values: vulnerability.
After his second divorce, Derek began questioning the way he approached relationships, trust, and emotional connection. Having spent much of his life learning that vulnerability could be used against him, opening up to others wasn't something that came naturally. But reading Brené Brown's Daring Greatly changed the way he understood what it actually means to be vulnerable.
Derek shares a personal approach he developed called the "Vulnerability Lob," a way of gradually building trust by sharing small pieces of yourself and paying attention to how others respond. He explores the difference between vulnerability and oversharing, why trust should be earned over time, and how our past experiences can influence our willingness to let people get close.
Because vulnerability isn't about telling everyone your deepest secrets. It's about having the courage to let the right people see who you really are, even when there's a chance you might get hurt.
The question is: Are you protecting yourself from people who might hurt you, or keeping out people who might actually love you?

Is courage about being fearless, or being willing to take the risk even when you're terrified of what might happen?
In this episode of Role Model, Derek Peterson explores how courage shaped his life, beginning with a childhood that forced him to become independent at an early age.
After being told in middle school that he'd have to pay his own way through college, Derek worked his way into multiple scholarship offers through academics, athletics, and leadership. Then he did something that some might call courageous and others might call incredibly stupid. He turned them all down to chase a career in music.
That decision eventually led to a decade in Los Angeles and an opportunity to work in management for Janet Jackson. But was it courage, recklessness, or a little bit of both?
Derek reflects on how our definition of courage changes as we get older. Sometimes it's taking a massive risk to pursue a dream. Other times, it's admitting you're wrong, asking for help, being vulnerable, or having a conversation you've been avoiding.
Because courage isn't about knowing everything will work out. It's about deciding something matters enough to try anyway.
And maybe the most important question is: What are you waiting to do because you're afraid?
Learn the lesson. Live the lesson. Pass it on.

What does it actually mean to own your shit?
In this episode of Role Model, Derek shares a story from his honeymoon when worry about his dogs turned into panic, frustration, and ultimately a decision to pack up the hotel and drive home early when the person watching them didn't show up.
At the time, Derek thought he was simply solving the problem. Looking back, he realized something much deeper was happening. Years of feeling like he had to handle problems on his own had taught him to take control instead of slowing down, asking for help, or listening to the person sitting beside him.
But understanding where our behavior comes from doesn't excuse it.
This episode explores the difference between explaining our behavior and defending it, why a real apology doesn't need a list of excuses, and how safe relationships can give us the space to admit when we've gotten something wrong.
Because accountability isn't about never screwing up.
It's about being willing to say, “I screwed up. This part is mine. What can I learn from it?”

What does it actually mean to take responsibility for your life? It doesn't mean everything that happens to you is your fault. It means learning to recognize what's yours to own and deciding what you're going to do with it.
In this episode of Role Model, Derek explores the difference between blame and responsibility, how therapy has helped him better recognize his own patterns and behavior, and why understanding why we do something doesn't excuse what we do. He also digs into one of the harder parts of emotional maturity: taking responsibility for your actions without taking responsibility for everyone else's.
Because sometimes the most empowering question isn't “Whose fault is this?”

Role Model Podcast with Derek Peterson
Everyone has a story that taught them something worth sharing.
Role Model is a podcast about the experiences that shape us and the values…
From there, we work backward. What happened in your life that taught you that lesson? What did it cost you to learn it? And how has it changed the way you live, work, parent, love, and lead today?
Alongside those conversations, Derek shares his own stories and lessons about emotional maturity, relationships, failure, growth, and becoming a better human.
This isn't about perfect people or having all the answers. It's about honest conversations, hard-earned wisdom, and sharing what we've learned so maybe someone else doesn't have to learn it the hard way.
