In this episode, Dr. Andrew Quanbeck and Dr. Felice Resnik provide an introduction to the essential role implementation science and systems engineering play in the development, growth and sustainment of an effective Learning Health System. We discuss the aims these approaches have in common, as well as some key differences, then explore strategies specific to those disciplines that enhance a health system's ability to be responsive to--and inclusive of – the needs of patients, providers and other partners in designing and delivering health care.
Dr. Quanbeck is Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health and head of the Implementation Science and Engineering Lab at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Felice Resnick is the Lead Implementation Scientist at the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research's D&I Launchpad.
