Studies show that more than 60% of dogs in America are overweight! How did this happen? There’s more than just the obvious “too many treats” explanation. Today we are talking with Kyle Baker, and pet nutrition expert for DogPerfect and with his help we will figure out why it happened and what we can do to reverse the trend of canine obesity.

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSKyle uses a unique formula to calculate how you can get control of your dog’s intake and thereby start on the path to a healthy weight. Taking the guesswork out of. how much to feed, use this equation. Start with your dog’s ideal weight, divide that by 2.2, then times that amount by 30 and add back 70. The answer to that equation will be how many K-Cal’s your dog should be consuming each day. When you are figuring this out – don’t forget to include the miscellaneous treats or G’dog handouts that make their way into your dogs mouth. Kyle says that 20% of KCals is a good rule of thumb to attribute to treats and kibble toppers.
Along the way in our chat with Kyle, he shares some fun games that are part of his evening routine to stimulate his pup’s brains and ergo their metabolism. These ideas are so simple and require no special equipment – anyone can do them. Check out our video chat here or listen to the audio podcast.

Mindy Kauffman, co-founder of Boo’s Ice House and Dog Bar in Sarasota Florida joins the Rover Reporter for a candid chat. Creating an indoor space where dogs and people can converge is not an easy feat.

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSThe idea first popped about 5 years ago and through careful research, study and blood, sweat and tears the property is now open and serving dogs and their owners. Several thousand square feet under air serve as an off-leash dog park, while a gated, no dog area is the food center focusing on brick-oven pizza. An outdoor area with umbrellas and misting fans, allows folks to enjoy a meal with their leashed pups. Aside from the nuts and bolts of creating a physical space, Mindy discusses the importance of building a community and supporting the local pet rescues and other small businesses. Weekly music events and seasonal celebrations add to the festivities and have built a loyal and growing fan base. For a more laid back visit, go in the afternoon and enjoy the oversized leather couches and multiple televisions while your pooch gets their scurry on. Vaccinated, well-behaved dogs are welcome to visit Boo’s Dog Bar with their parents of course. Here’s their website: https://www.boosdogbar.com/
