Remembering Nicolaas Bloembergen
Nicolaas Bloembergen was the Dutch physicist who won one-quarter of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1981 for his work in nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy. His experience was profoundly shaped by his youth in The Netherlands during World War II, before he came to the United States. His work has had important applications in a number of areas where the properties of lasers can be used for practical benefit. He was also an advisor to the government on the potential use of lasers for the Strategic Defense Initiative of the1980’s, and his work with others indicate the use of lasers in space as a defensive weapon was not feasible.
